Unlike general corrosion, which spreads visibly across a surface, pitting corrosion often does its damage in small, concentrated points sometimes barely visible from the outside, while doing real damage beneath the surface.

What Is Pitting Corrosion?
Pitting corrosion is a localized form of corrosion that creates small holes, or "pits," in a metal surface, rather than corroding the surface evenly. A component affected by pitting can look largely intact at a glance, with the real damage concentrated in a handful of small, deep points.
This localized nature is exactly what makes pitting corrosion particularly dangerous. A pit that's only a few millimeters wide on the surface can extend much deeper into the material, reducing the component's structural integrity in ways that are not obvious from a visual inspection alone.
What Causes It?
Pitting corrosion typically develops when a small, localized breakdown occurs in a metal's protective surface layer, often a passive oxide layer that would otherwise shield the metal from its environment. Once that protective layer is compromised at a specific point, corrosion concentrates there rather than spreading evenly.
Common contributing factors include:
- Chloride exposure — seawater and other chloride-rich environments are one of the most common triggers, which is why pitting is especially prevalent in marine applications
- Surface imperfections — scratches, inclusions, or manufacturing defects can create weak points where the protective layer breaks down first
- Stagnant or low-flow conditions — areas where fluid movement is minimal allow localized chemical concentrations to build up, accelerating pit formation
- Deposits and debris — dirt, scale, or other deposits sitting on a surface can create isolated conditions underneath them that promote pitting
- Dissimilar metal contact — certain metal combinations can create localized electrochemical conditions that encourage pit formation at the contact point
In many cases, it's a combination of these factors such as a stressed or imperfect surface, an aggressive environment, and time that allows pitting to take hold.
Why Pitting Corrosion Is Often More Serious Than It Looks
Because pitting is localized and can be small on the surface, it's easy to underestimate. But a few characteristics make it particularly concerning:
- Depth versus surface appearance — a pit can be significantly deeper than its surface diameter suggests, meaning visual inspection alone can miss the true extent of the damage
- Progressive nature — once started, pitting tends to continue at the same location, since the local conditions that caused it often persist
- Structural impact — deep pits can act as stress concentration points, increasing the risk of cracking or failure under load, well beyond what the pit's size alone would suggest

Can Pitting Corrosion Be Repaired?
