Myth-Busting: Is Brush Plating the Same as Electroplating?

"So, you're an electroplating company?"
It's a question we hear often and it's an easy assumption to make. Both processes use an electrochemical reaction to deposit metal onto a surface. Both are used to protect or restore components. On the surface, they can look similar.
But Brush Plating and traditional (tank) electroplating are fundamentally different processes, built for different jobs. Understanding that difference matters because it's exactly why Brush Plating can do things conventional electroplating simply can't.
The Core Difference: Selective vs. Whole-Part
Traditional electroplating requires submerging an entire component into a tank of plating solution. The whole part goes in, and the whole part gets plated every surface, whether it needs it or not.
Brush Plating (also known as selective plating) does the opposite. Instead of a tank, a portable applicator is used to apply plating solution directly to a specific, targeted area and only that area. The rest of the component is untouched. This one distinction changes almost everything about how, where, and why the process is used.
Myth 1: "It's Just a Smaller Version of Tank Plating"
Reality: It's a different process for a different purpose entirely.
Tank plating is designed for uniform, whole-part coating. Think of coating an entire batch of small fasteners or components as part of a manufacturing process.
Brush Plating is designed for targeted repair and localized treatment, rebuilding a worn section of a shaft, reinforcing a specific connection thread, or restoring a scored bearing surface, without affecting the rest of the part.
One is not a smaller version of the other. They solve different problems.
Myth 2: "The Part Always Needs to Be Removed and Sent to a Facility"
Reality: Brush Plating is portable, often, the part never has to move at all.
Because tank plating requires full immersion, the component has to be removed from service and transported to a plating facility with the right tank setup. That means disassembly, freight, and downtime before any actual repair work begins.

Because the process treats a defined area rather than an entire part, plating thickness can be controlled to a very high degree of accuracy, restoring a worn surface to its exact original dimensional tolerance, measured in microns. For repair work specifically, where the goal is to precisely rebuild a damaged area rather than coat an entire surface, this level of control is a genuine advantage.
Myth 4: "It's Only Used for Small or Simple Jobs"
Reality: Brush Plating is used across major industries on critical, high-value components.
